Congratulations to Johan McConnell
President and founder, South Yaphank Civic Association

Chosen by the Long Island Business News as one of the 20 most influential people of the year!

Johan McConnell could have easily challenged developers’ plans to build a truck/rail terminal in her community when the idea was first pitched years ago. Instead, McConnell did her homework. She listened to facts rather than hysteria, and decided her group should give its blessing to the now-operating Brookhaven Rail Terminal.

The project, a joint venture among Landbridge Intermodal, D.A. Collins Cos., Pratt Bros. Construction, Watral Bros. and US Rail, has already created 25 jobs and will take at least 40,000 trucks off the Long Island Expressway in its first year in operation.

The rail terminal is expected to be a significant step in lowering the cost of shipping goods to and from Long Island; reducing long-haul truck traffic; creating an enhanced short-haul trucking industry with smaller, more efficient trucks; increasing local jobs; and reducing emissions and reliance on foreign oil supplies.

A shining example of rational thought, McConnell did something many civic leaders wouldn’t dream of.
