From Legislator Kate Browning's office:

To Whom It May Concern:

County Executive Steve Bellone has introduced legislation to sell county owned land in Yaphank to a company, Oakland Transportation, who is affiliated with Brookhaven Rail Terminal. IR 1695-12 authorizes the County Executive to sell the land, which was originally proposed for Legacy Village. There is a public hearing scheduled on August 7 at 6:30pm at the legislature in Hauppauge. The County Executive wants an up or down vote on the resolution on August 21.

Legislator Browning has requested that the resolution be tabled in committee until public meetings can be held with the local civic organizations and the Longwood and South Country School Districts. The resolution will be tabled in Ways and Means Committee tomorrow for the purposes of holding a public hearing at the legislatureís Tuesday, August 7 meeting. The public hearing will be at 6:30pm in Hauppauge. We need to encourage as many residents as possible to attend. Legislator Browning is hoping the community can strongly attend the public hearing next week in order to convince the legislature to hold off on voting on this resolution until the public has had an opportunity to receive all the necessary information and provide input. Please pass this information on to anyone who would like attend and is concerned about the future of this land.

The only information the legislator has at this time is a conceptual plan from the proposed buyer to expand Brookhaven Rail Terminalís rail spur and build storage facilities for products being shipped in via the railroad. However, the contract of sale as proposed does not require any particular plan and simply sells the vacant land. In addition, the planning department has stated that none of the land proposed for sale is in the Carmanís River watershed, but that still needs to be confirmed. We hope to see you next Tuesday in Hauppauge.

If you plan on speaking please arrive early and fill out a card. Thank you.
